Spring Awakening is a coming-of-age rock musical with music by Duncan Sheik and a book and lyrics by Steven Sater. It is based on the 1891 German play Spring Awakening by Frank Wedekind. Set in late 19th-century Germany, the musical tells the story of teenagers discovering the inner and outer tumult of adolescent sexuality. In the musical, alternative rock is employed as part of the folk-infused rock score.

After first seeing and falling in love with this show on Broadway in 2007 comined with being originally from a small town just outside of Leeds, it was a speciaal privedlge to be invited to direct and choreograph this musical for the first ever graduates of the new MT course at Leeds Conservatoire. This production held the show firmly at the intersection between the original German play & the Americana cultural world in which it was written for Broadway.
